OHIO DOMINICAN DEFEATS GUILFORD MEN'S BASKETBALL, 95-78
GREENSBORO, NC (12/29/05) -- Senior Haze Massey and sophomore Brian Busch scored 24 points apiece in visiting Ohio Dominican's 95-78 men's basketball win over Guilford Thursday night.
The NAIA Panthers (6-5) placed five student-athletes in double-figure scoring in
their third straight win. The NCAA Division III Quakers drop to 4-4 with their
third consecutive setback.
Guilford scrapped back from an early deficit to tie the game at 17 midway
through the first half, but Massey fueled a decisive 30-6 Panthers' run over the
next nine minutes that helped the guests to a 53-28 halftime lead. Massey, a
guard, scored 13 of his 15 first-half points during the spurt, including eight
straight in a 64-second span.
Freshman center Austyn Covington opened the second-half scoring and gave Ohio
Dominican a 55-28 edge, its largest of the game. Guilford twice rallied to
within 15 points midway through the period, but could not slow the hot-shooting
Panthers, who made 56.9 percent of their field goals and outrebounded the
Quakers, 38-31. Ohio Dominican outscored Guilford, 54-40, in the paint and
converted 16 offensive rebounds into 19 points.
Busch,
who added eight rebounds, made nine-of-13 shots from the floor and scored 13
second-half points. Covington notched his team-leading sixth double-double with
12 points and 10 rebounds. His backup, senior Brian Otler, made all six field
goals and finished with 12 points and six boards in 20 minutes. Senior guard
Donta Patterson also scored a dozen points.
Sophomore guard Ray Edmond paced the Quakers with a season-high 16 points
and five rebounds off the bench, including 14 in the second half. Sophomore
center Ben Strong finished with 14 points and four rebounds.
Guilford entertains Heidelberg Friday (12/30) at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers conclude their North Carolina trip Friday (12/30) at Greensboro College at 7:00 p.m.
