"Men's Basketball Release (2005-06) - Guilford Defeats Italian Jr National BB Team, 80-76" - Guilford College

 

     Greensboro, NC (11/9/05) -- Sophomore Caleb Kimbrough scored all three of his points from the free-throw line in the final minute, including the go-ahead basket with 45 seconds left, in Guilford's 80-76 exhibition men's basketball win over the Italian Under-18 National Team Wednesday night.

 

The Quakers trailed the entire first half and by as many as eight points in the second period. Down 61-55 with 8:42 left, a Jordan Snipes three-pointer and seven straight Ben Strong (left) points comprised a 10-2 Guilford burst that gave the Quakers their second lead of the game. Pietro Aradori, who scored a game-high 30 points, scored seven straight points, including a jumper with 1:23 left to give the Italians their final lead of the game at 76-74.

 

Guilford sophomore Ray Edmond's runner in the lane 26 seconds later tied the game at 76-76. An Aradori foul sent Kimbrough to the line with 45 seconds left where he made one of two shots. Strong corralled the rebound the miss of Kimbrough's second shot and fed Edmond, who drew a foul and made one of two shots with 39 ticks left for a 78-76 Quakers' lead.

 

      Marco Giuri's runner through traffic in the lane did not fall, Edmond got the rebound and Kimbrough dribbled time off the clock before Giovanni Tomassini sent him to the line with six seconds left. Kimbrough sealed the victory by making both shots.

 

       Strong, a 6-10 sophomore center, scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the second half and added game-high 12 rebounds. Rookie George Neville contributed 14 points and four boards. Snipes finished with nine points and five rebounds. The Quakers made 27 of 39 free throws and outrebounded the Italians, 44-29.

 

      Aradori's 30 points included 12-of-17 shooting from the floor and four three pointers. Tomassini added six points and a game-high eight assists. Andrea Renzi had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench before fouling out. The Italians only made 15 trips to the free-throw line.

 

      Guilford plays its first regular-season game Nov. 18 at Webber International (FL).
