GUILFORD HOSTS HIGH-SCORING EMORY & HENRY WEDNESDAY IN ODAC HOOPS
Greensboro, NC (1/17/06) -- Guilford College's men's basketball team entertains one of NCAA Division III's top-scoring squads Wednesday (1/18) at 7:00 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest. The game is a rematch of the Nov. 30 tilt in Emory, VA, won by the Quakers, 147-136. The teams combined for an NCAA Division III record 126 rebounds and Guilford set school marks for points, free throws made (41) and combined points (283).
Emory & Henry (6-8, 2-5 ODAC) employs a constant full-court press defensively and shoots quick three-pointers on offense. The team has used 21 different student-athletes this season, including 12 who average at least 10 minutes per game. The Wasps rank third among NCAA Division III scoring leaders through games of Jan. 8 and lead the ODAC with a 110.3 scoring average. Emory & Henry has reached the 100-point plateau eight times and owns seven of the top-18 single-game scores in Division III this year. The Wasps set the ODAC scoring standard in a 150-110 win over Thomas More Nov. 26, the highest scoring Division III game this year. Coach Bob Johnson's club ranks fourth among the national three-pointers per game leaders and has made 251 of 919 trifectas (27.3%) through 14 games.
The Wasps made 30-of-97 (30.9%) three-pointers in the Nov. 30 contest with Guilford and shot 44-of-129 (34.1%) overall from the floor. The Quakers took only two shots from beyond the arc, opting instead for close-range shots after breaking the press. Guilford made 53-of-80 shots for a season-high .663 field-goal percentage and outrebounded the hosts, 65-61. Emory & Henry forced Guilford into 31 turnovers, but committed 45 fouls, which sent the Quakers to the free-throw line 58 times. Jordan Snipes netted 25 points in the win, followed by Ben Strong's 24 points and Thomas Burge's 23 points. Emory & Henry's Lance Reasbeck, who is no longer on the team, scored a game-high 32 points.
Guilford (7-8, 5-3 ODAC) rides a three-game winning streak into Wednesday's tilt. No strangers to up-tempo basketball, the Quakers stand second to the Wasps among ODAC scoring leaders (82.1 points per game). Guilford ranks 30th among the national scoring leaders through games of Jan. 8. Strong, a 6-10 sophomore center, won his second ODAC's Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award Monday (1/16). He ranks second in the league in scoring (19.2 ppg.) and first in blocked shots (1.8 bpg.). Snipes is Guilford's second-leading scorer with 12.5 points per game, which ranks 12th in the conference.
Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. game in Ragan-Brown Field House on Guilford's campus are available at the door. Adults tickets cost $4. Youth tickets (ages 6-18) cost $2. Children under 6, Guilford students, faculty and staff receive free admission. As part of a special "Guilford Student Night" promotion, Guilford students in attendance will receive free food at halftime. The game will also be broadcast live over the Internet for no charge at www.sportsjuice.com.
