GUILFORD RALLIES FOR 109-106 WIN OVER EMORY & HENRY
GREENSBORO, NC (1/18/06) --
Caleb Kimbrough's late-game heroics helped Guilford pull out a 109-106
Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Emory
& Henry Wednesday night. The Quakers' fourth-straight triumph gave Guilford
(8-8, 6-3 ODAC) a sweep of the season series with the Wasps (6-9, 2-6 ODAC) for
the first time since 2000-01.
Kimbrough's pull-up jumper with 1:40 left broke the game's
fifth and final tie and gave the Quakers an insurmountable 106-104 edge. After
Ben Strong made one-of-two free throws with 27 seconds remaining, Gary
Kerns' layup at the other end made it a 107-106 game 17 seconds later. Following
an Emory & Henry time out, the Wasps fouled Kimbrough with nine seconds left.
For the second straight game, the sophomore point guard preserved a Quakers' win
by making two free throws in the waning seconds. His free throws with six
seconds left provided the final margin in Guilford's 72-68 win over Bridgewater
Jan. 15.
Strong, Guilford's 6-10 sophomore center and the reigning
ODAC Player of the Week, finished with a career-high 30 points on 14-of-16
shooting from the floor. He made his first 11 shots from the floor and netted 20
points in the second half, which helped Guilford overcome a 12-point second-half
deficit.
The Wasps' constant full-court defensive pressure resulted in
Guilford's 19 first-half turnovers, which led to 25 Emory & Henry points. Kerns
had 14 of his team-high 26 points by the break and Cain Landreth added 13 of his
16 points in the first half.
Kerns stuck consecutive three-pointers during a 10-0 Wasps'
run early in the second stanza. Antonio Leary's layup with 15:11 remaining gave
the guests a 73-61 edge, but Emory & Henry could not maintain the lead as their
frenetic, trifecta-laden pace can yield points almost as fast as they're scored.
Guilford answered with a 26-6 spurt over the next 6:31 and led 87-79 with 8:40
left in the game. The Quakers' L.T. Lockett scored all 10 of his
second-half points during the run and Strong added seven points.
Emory & Henry battled back and grabbed a 94-91 lead on Hank
Luton's layup with 5:21 left, but two Strong baskets sandwiched around a Wasps'
offensive foul eclipsed the Wasps' final lead of the night.
Guilford placed five student-athletes in double-figure scoring, including
Jordan Snipes, who totaled 22 points, a game-high eight assists and five
boards. Junior Thomas Burge scored 11 of Guilford's first 17 points
before encountering foul trouble and ending with 12 points. Kimbrough also
scored a dozen and added four assists. The Quakers outrebounded the Wasps,
57-45, and shot 58.3 percent from the floor with no three-point attempts.
Emory & Henry made 14-of-54 shots from beyond the arc, down
from their 97 three-point tries in the teams' Nov. 30 meeting, a 147-136
Guilford win in Emory, VA. NCAA Division III's number-two offensive team just
missed its average of 110.3 points per game and crossed the 100-point plateau
for the ninth time.
Guilford visits league-rival Lynchburg Saturday (1/21) at
4:00 p.m. Emory & Henry hosts Hampden-Sydney Saturday (1/21) at 2:00 p.m.
