- MEN'S HOOPSTERS USE SECOND-HALF SURGE TO DEFEAT CHOWAN
MURFREESBORO, NC (12/11/04) -- Guilford College used a second half surge to
propel them over the Braves Saturday, 72-64. The game featured eleven ties and
eleven total lead changes.
Chowan played a solid first half, committing just
three turnovers while scoring 9 points off of Guilford's 12 turnovers. Chowan's
Joseph Cowan nailed a three pointer with just over 4:00 to play in the first
half to give the Braves a 29-28 lead. Wayne Hambrick scored 12 points to help
Chowan take a 35-33 lead into half time.
Guilford came out strong in the second period,
draining a three-pointer at the 19:35 to go ahead 36-35. Chowan's Roland Brown
scored on the Braves next possession to get the Braves lead back 37-36. Over the
next two minutes Guilford went on an 8-0 run to stretch their lead 46-37. Chowan
tied the game at 46-46 with fourteen minutes to play and even took a 52-49 lead
at the 10:27 mark before Guilford started their second-half comeback.
Guilford's Jordan Snipes hit a three
pointer at the 9:41 mark to go ahead 56-52. The Braves battled to keep it close
in the waning minutes but couldn't come up with the timely baskets they needed
to get the win.
For Chowan four players scored in double-figures
led by Travyon Lathan who scored 18 points. He also had 5 assists and 7 rebounds
in the game. Hambrick hit for 12 points while Cedric Armstrong and Montino
Williams added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Chowan shot 37% from the floor (26-70) while
Guilford shot at a 40% clip (27-67). Chowan out rebounded the Quakers 48-40 in
the game while committing a season-low 11 turnovers.
Chowan falls to 3-6 overall while Guilford
improves to 4-3 on the year. Guilford returns to action on Thursday (12/16) as
they travel down the road to battle UNC-Greensboro. The game begins at
7:00 p.m.
