Men's Basketball Release (2004-05) - Atkinson POTW - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD'S ATKINSON NAMED ODAC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

GREENSBORO, NC (1/10/05) -- Guilford College freshman Kerry Atkinson received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award for the week ending Jan. 9, the league announced Monday. Atkinson is Guilford's first recipient of the prize this season.

Atkinson averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 18.5 minutes per game in Guilford's two home wins over the ODAC's top-two teams. He made 15-of-27 field goals in two games, including three of four three-pointers. The 6-3, 165-pound forward scored a team-high 14 points and had five rebounds in the Quakers' 76-69 win over Randolph-Macon Jan. 8. He scored 11 points off the bench in the first half, which helped Guilford grab a halftime lead it did not relinquish. The victory marked Guilford's first over the Yellow Jackets since Jan. 12, 1999, a span of 12 games.

The following day, Atkinson tallied a career- and game-high 20 points off the bench in the Quakers' 74-68 upset of nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan Jan. 9. The rookie went off for 13 points in the opening half and paced the Quakers with five rebounds. The Marlins entered the game ranked 14th in the D3hoops.com NCAA Division III national poll.

With his strong offensive performance, Atkinson moved into second place on the Quakers' scoring chart (9.2 ppg.), tops among rookies. He leads the Quakers in steals (14) and stands second on the club with a .400 three-point field goal percentage (10-25).

Coach Tom Palombo's club (8-4, 3-2 ODAC) has won four straight games and six of its last seven. The lone loss in that stretch came Dec. 16 at Division I UNC Greensboro. The Quakers close out a five-game home stand Wednesday (1/12) against league-rival Roanoke at 7:00 p.m.
