VIRGINIA WESLEYAN HOLDS OFF GUILFORD IN ODAC QUARTERFINALS
Salem, VA (02/21/04) -- Brandon Adair and Marcus Fitch scored 21 points each as Virginia Wesleyan held off a furious second-half comeback from Guilford in the second quarterfinal of the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Tournament.
David
Doino set an ODAC Championships record with 14
assists, and also contributed nine points and six rebounds for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan had hot shooting hands in the first half, connecting on 16-of-32 (.500) shots and led by as many as 18 points before taking a 48-35 lead at the half.
Peter
Warren knocked down a three-pointer to open the second half for the Marlins,
but Guilford used a 13-2 run over the next 4:15 to trim the deficit to five.
Virginia Wesleyan responded with four three pointers over the next four minutes
and resumed another double-figure lead, 69-58 at the
Virginia
Wesleyan finished the game with a .483 shooting mark (29-of-60) and nailed
11-of-21 (.524) three point attempts.
The
Marlins (19-7) advance to Sunday's semifinal game to face eighth seeded
