Game Statistics

Greensboro, NC (12/31/03) -- Senior forward Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) matched his career high with 19 points in Guilford's 74-68 overtime men's basketball win over visiting Hiram Wednesday. Swindell scored all of his points after halftime, including five in the extra period.

With both teams coming off of a nearly two-week layoff, fatigue showed in overtime where the clubs combined to make only three of 14 field goals. Senior Josh Connor's (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) basket 1:08 into the extra frame gave Guilford (4-5) the lead for good, 68-66. Swindell swelled the hosts' advantage to 73-66 with a traditional three-point play followed by two free throws with 24 seconds left. Freshman Brandon Pool's (Elyria, OH/Elyria) layup with 17 seconds remaining marked the Terriers' (2-8) lone overtime points.

Swindell helped Guilford erase a 10-point deficit with 14 second-half points on six-of-seven field-goal shooting. Once the Quakers recovered from their hole, the teams settled into an entertaining affair that featured seven lead changes and six ties in the second half. Hiram's DaJuan Whiteside (Akron, OH/Buchtel) buried a rare outside jumper with 48 seconds left in regulation as the shot clock expired, which gave the guests a 66-64 advantage. The Quakers forced their second overtime game of the year on two Devon Clyburn (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) free throws with 13 seconds remaining.

After Guilford's 15 first-half turnovers led to 17 Hiram points, the Quakers committed only five miscues the rest of the game, none in overtime.

Hiram's A.J. White (Englewood, FL/Lemon Bay) and Carlton Dean (Cleveland Heights, OH/Lutheran East) shared game-high scoring honors with 19 points apiece. White, who also had a game-high eight assists, tallied 16 first-half points. Dean, the Terriers' leading scorer, sat out the first half for undisclosed reasons before scoring 19 of Hiram's 32 second-half points. Pool finished with 12 points, seven assists, nine boards and five steals.

Clyburn had 13 points and five assists as the Quakers placed five players in double-figure scoring. Connor added 12 points, seven boards, three steals and a career- and game-high eight assists. Sophomore Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Academy) scored 11 points off the bench and junior point guard Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) tallied 10 points and four assists in his first game back from an injury sustained in Guilford's season opener. Senior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) had nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Guilford resumes Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Saturday (1/3) at Lynchburg, while the Terriers continue on a challenging road trip that takes them to North Coast Athletic Conference rivals Earlham Friday (1/2) and Wabash (1/4).
