CLYBURN LIFTS GUILFORD MEN PAST CATHOLIC IN OVERTIME
Lancaster, PA -- Senior Devon Clyburn (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) scored at the buzzer to give Guilford a 98-96 overtime win over nationally ranked Catholic Friday night in the opening game of the S.W. Sponaugle Classic at Franklin & Marshall College.
The Cardinals, ranked 18th in the preseason D3hoops.com Division III poll, won the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship.
Guilford rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit thanks in part to senior Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh), who scored Guilford's last seven points in regulation, including a short jumper with 4.2 seconds that tied the game at 79-79.
"We played extremely hard and never gave up," said Guilford head coach Tom Palombo after his first game as the Quakers' coach. "We battled through a great deal of adversity. We lost (starting point guard) Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) to a bad ankle injury early in the second half, but our guys battled back, put it together and got it done."
The Quakers never trailed in overtime and led by as many as 95-89 before the Cardinals' Patrick Satalin tied the score at 96 with a driving layup with nine seconds left. Guilford made six of seven shots from the floor and shot 50.7 percent for the game, including two-of-three three-pointers.
Clarke led four Guilford players in double figures with 19 points and added a team-high six rebounds. Senior Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) added 17 points and six rebounds and Clyburn matched his career high with 16 points.
Guilford advances to the tournament final Saturday night against host Franklin & Marshall at 8:00 pm. The Diplomats defeated Washington and Lee in Friday's second game.
