  • DEFENSE LIFTS GUILFORD TO MEN'S BASKETBALL WIN OVER CHOWAN

Greensboro, NC (01/09/03) -- Sophomore Brandon Clifford's (Greensboro, NC/Page) game-high 14 points paced four Guilford players in double-figure scoring in the Quakers' 85-57 men's basketball win over visiting Chowan Thursday night. Guilford (4-5) turned 29 Chowan (3-8) turnovers into 37 points to win its second game in as many nights.

The Quakers' (4-5) full-court pressure defense fueled a 22-6 first-half run that turned an early five-point deficit into an 11-point lead. Guilford led at the break, 34-24. Junior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) scored eight of his 12 points and Guilford's defense held Chowan to one field goal during the decisive spurt. Clarke collected 10 points and Clifford added nine in the opening half.

Guilford junior guard Ron Bradford (Eden, NC/Greensboro Day) opened the second stanza with three consecutive three-pointers and finished with four trifectas and 13 points, all in the final 20 minutes. The Quakers' defense and hot shooting from the floor prevented a Chowan comeback and extended their advantage to as many as 31 points. Guilford made 64.3 percent of its shots in the second half, including eight-of-11 (72.7%) three-pointers.

Junior forward Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Southside) made three of four three-pointers and joined Bradford with 13 points. Clarke grabbed a game-high six rebounds and junior Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) totaled five points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Freshman guard James Parker (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) knocked in two three-pointers and finished with a career-high eight points off the bench.

Chowan freshman guard Andy Perry (Las Vegas, NV/Sheldon) shared game-high scoring honors with 14 points. Senior forward DeJuan Green (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover) netted 12 points off the bench, seven below his season average. Junior forward Jeremy Sims (Dobson, NC/Surry CC) contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Guilford visits unbeaten Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Randolph-Macon Saturday (1/11). The Yellow Jackets are ranked third in this week's D3hoops.com Division III national poll. Chowan hosts North Carolina Wesleyan January 15 in a Dixie Conference matchup.
