Men's Basketball Release - Estes Resigns - Guilford College

  • ESTES RESIGNS HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACHING POSITION

Greensboro, NC (06/06/03) -- Butch Estes announced he will resign as Guilford College's head men's basketball coach to accept the same position at Miami-Dade Community College Friday. The news leaves Guilford without a men's or women's head basketball coach as Barb Bausch leaves the women's post June 23 to become an assistant coach at Division I Cal State-Fullerton, her alma mater.

Estes compiled a 43-58 record in four seasons at Guilford and helped restore a program that slumped to 3-21 in 1998-99. His 43 victories stand third on the Quakers' coaching wins list. Guilford improved to 6-18 in Estes' first year before posting a 10-15 record in 2000-01 and returning to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament for the first time in six years. Estes shared the 2000-01 ODAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year Award. He guided the Quakers to their best season since 1988-89 when the 2001-02 club posted a 15-11 overall record and won a school-record 10 ODAC games. The Quakers went 12-14 (8-10 ODAC) in 2002-03 and earned the fifth seed at the ODAC Tournament, the best in school history. Three Guilford players earned second-team All-ODAC honors in Estes' tenure.

Guilford marked Estes' third head coaching position. He coached Division I Furman University to a 135-122 record from 1985-94 and helped the Paladins to the school's only National Invitational Tournament (NIT) berth in 1991. The 1971 UNC Chapel Hill graduate guided Presbyterian College to a 92-63 mark from 1980-85. In 17 seasons, Estes' career head coaching record stands at 270-243.

Guilford athletic director Marion Kirby will lead his fourth national search for a head coach in as many weeks to find Estes' successor. The new coach inherits a solid nucleus of players as only one senior graduated from the 2002-03 unit. All of the Quakers' top scorers return, including senior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh), a second-team All-ODAC pick in 2003, and juniors Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page) and Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville).
