Brian Creghan Earns Academic Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C.(5/21/09) -- Guilford College junior Brian Creghan earned First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III At-Large Team honors Thursday from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He was also one of 42 NCAA Division III golfers honored as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar this week.


CoSIDA members nominated and selected the academic all-district teams. The all-district squads are comprised of crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, golf and tennis student-athletes from Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.3 grade point average. As a first-team all-district selection, Creghan is eligible for the organization's Academic All-American teams, which will be announced June 9.


The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) awarded the All-America Scholar commendation. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 79.0 in Division III and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. Recipients must also be of high moral character and in good standing at his college or university.


CreghanAfter earning honorable mention All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recognition for two consecutive years, Creghan captured First Team All-ODAC honors this season. He also won the league's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and was named to the ODAC's Sportsmanship Team. The junior stood second on the team and fourth in the league with a career-low 76.20 stroke average with six top-12 finishes on the year. His best performance was in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate Sept. 19-21 when he placed sixth with a three-day 216. Creghan is a five-time dean's list business management major and a two-time Academic All-ODAC selection. He was recently named a student marshal at Guilford and inducted into the school's Scholarship Society.

Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers' were ranked eighth in the final Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll and seventh according to the May 20 Golfstat.com Division III Ratings. The Quakers finished second among eight teams in the ODAC Tournament in Cape Charles, Va., Apr. 18-20 and could return as many as three letter winners in 2009-10, including Creghan.
