Guilford Wins Top ODAC Golf Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/20/09) -- Guilford College placed three student-athletes on the 2008-09 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) golf teams and captured three of the league's top individual honors Monday. Junior Peter Latimer was named the league's Golfer of the Year and the Quakers' Jack Jensen earned his league-record ninth Coach of the Year honor. Junior Brian Creghan received the league's Golf Scholar-Athlete prize and joined Latimer and senior Burton Wood on the First Team All-ODAC squad. Creghan also represented Guilford on the league's Sportsmanship Team. The league's head coaches nominated and voted for the award winners.

The announcement gives Guilford 51 All-ODAC selections since joining the league in 1991-92. Latimer is the Quakers' 10th Golfer of the Year in 16 seasons.

LatimerLatimer, the 2006-2007 ODAC Rookie of the Year, helped his case by winning his last two tournaments, including the ODAC Championships Apr. 18-20. The junior also claimed the 54-hole West Regional Invitational Apr. 6-7 and now has four career individual titles. He has five top-11 finishes in 10 events this season and leads the ODAC with a 74.40 stroke average in 25 rounds. Latimer won the league's Golfer of the Week Award three times this year, raising his career total to eight

WoodWood, a three-time All-ODAC pick, finished among the top-10 at three tournaments this season. His 76.68 stroke average ranks third on the team and sixth in the league as of April 15. He won the Oct. 6 ODAC Golfer of the Week Award following his sixth-place finish in the Greensboro College Invitational Sept. 29-30 with a 36-hole score of 145. Wood also placed sixth at the Oglethorpe Invitational Oct. 20-21 with a two-day 143.

CreghanAfter earning honorable mention All-ODAC for two consecutive years, Creghan won First Team All-ODAC honors this season. He stands second on the team with a 76.20 stroke average and has six top-12 finishes on the year. His best performance was in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate Sept. 19-21 where he placed sixth with a three-day 216. He ranked fourth among the league's stroke average leaders as of Apr. 15. Also a standout student, Creghan is a four-time dean's list business management major and a 2008 Academic All-ODAC selection. He was recently named a student marshal at Guilford and inducted into the school's Scholarship Society.

JensenThe coach of the year honor marks the latest in Jensen's distinguished career. Now in his 33rd golf season, Jensen has led the Quakers to three second-place finishes and eight top-five efforts in nine team events this year. Guilford has been ranked among the nation's top-10 teams in both the Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll and the Golfstat.com Division III ratings for most of the season. Jensen has coached Guilford's golf teams to national titles in 1989, 2002 and 2005. He was inducted into the Golf Coaches' Association of America and North Carolina Sports Halls of Fame in 2008.

Guilford is ranked eighth in the Apr. 22 Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll. The Quakers finished second among eight teams in the ODAC Tournament in Cape Charles, Va., Apr. 18-20. Guilford has completed its regular season and hopes for an at-large bid to next month's NCAA Division III Championships in Florida. The 36-team field will be announced May 4.
