Guilford's Wade Wins Weekly Awards
Greensboro, N.C. (10/29/07) -- Guilford College freshman Jonathan Wade won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golfer of the Week Award Monday. Wade, the second Quaker to earn the honor this season, also picked up Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week prize, presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Wade led the Quakers at the Oglethorpe Fall Invitational in Oakwood, Ga., by finishing first in a 63-student field Oct. 22-23. He shot a five-under-par 137 (72-65) and helped the Quakers place first among 12 teams. Wade, who won his first college medalist crown, shot a six-under 65 in the second round, the second-lowest round in school history. His 36-hole 137 also matches the third-lowest score in Guilford history. The performance marked his second top-10 finish this season. Wade's team-leading stroke average of 72.44 in nine rounds ranks second in the ODAC.
The Oglethorpe Invitational marked Guilford's second top-five finish this season. Coach Jack Jensen's club knocked off eight teams ranked in the Oct. 17 Nike Golf/Golf World Division III Coaches' Poll, including top-ranked Methodist and second ranked Oglethorpe. The Quakers, who are ranked third, kick off the spring season with the Pine Needles Intercollegiate Tournament Feb. 25-26 in Southern Pines, N.C.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include canned food drives, assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
