Guilford's Burton Wood Wins Weekly Honors

Burton WoodGreensboro, N.C. (3/5/07) -- Guilford College sophomore Burton Wood won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golfer of the Week award and Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week award, presented by the Quakers' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Wood paced Guilford February 26-27 at the Mid-Pines/Pfeiffer Invitational in Southern Pines, N.C. by winning the first individual tournament title of his collegiate career. He finished first in the 74-student field by shooting a one-under-par 143 (67-76) over 36 holes and helped the Quakers place second among 14 teams. The performance also marked Wood's first top-10 career finish. His first-round score of 67 was a team low this season, and his overall score of 143 was also a personal best. Wood's stroke average of 74.42 in 12 rounds ranks third on the team.

The Mid-Pines marked Guilford's first spring event and the Quakers' fourth top-five finish in seven tournaments. Coach Jack Jensen's club is ranked fourth in the Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA)/Bridgestone Coaches' Poll and second in the Golfstat.com Division III rankings.

Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
