Joseph Poplin Named Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week
Greensboro, N.C. (4/3/07) -- Guilford College senior Joseph Poplin won Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award presented by the Quakers' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Tuesday.
Poplin boasted a record-breaking performance March 30-April 1 at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate in Camp Lejeune, N.C. on his way to a third-place finish. He shot a 62 in the second round, surpassing Guilford's previous 18-hole record by four strokes. Combined with a first-round 71, Poplin's 36 -hole 133 also broke the school's two-day best by four shots. His 74 in the final round helped him to a three-day 207 total, tying Guilford's 54-hole record. Poplin's outstanding performance led Guilford to an eighth-place finish in a pool of 32 teams. In addition to Poplin's records, the Quakers shattered the school's single-round best by shooting a 271 in the second round.
Poplin leads the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with a 72.00 stroke average in 17 rounds. He has six top-10 finishes this season and is the second-highest ranked Division III golfer in the April 3 Golfstat Cup Ratings.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
Head coach Jack Jensen's team is listed second in the March 28 Golfstat.com rankings and third in the March 14 Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll. The Quakers are back in action April 8-9 at the Emory Spring Invitational.
