Campbell Wins Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic Men’s Golf Tournament
Buies Creek, N.C. (3/6/07) -- Kyle Spahr and Fredric Sundberg both shot final-round 69s on Tuesday and Campbell University won the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic intercollegiate men’s golf tournament at Keith Hills No. 1.
Campbell won its spring tournament for the third-straight time (no tournament was held in 2004 or 2005) and the seventh time in the 22-year history of the event.
The Camels have won the last two events by a total of one stroke. Last year, Campbell and Liberty tied after 54 holes of play at 902 strokes. Campbell won the playoff on the fourth hole. This year, Campbell was one stroke better (585) than runner-up Radford (586).
Elon finished third at 590 strokes, followed by Gardner-Webb (606) and Longwood (607) in the 15-school field. Guilford College, the lone Division III team in the field, placed ninth (615).
Individual medalist Josh Meador of Radford set a tournament 36-hole scoring record (140) by shooting 72-68. His score was one stroke better than the previous record of 141 set in 1986 by Chris Gale (Coastal Carolina) and equaled by Brad Fritsch (Campbell) 2000.
Scooter Buhrman of Longwood and Spahr tied for second at one-under 143. Sundberg tied with Elon’s Justin Newton at even par 144 for fourth place. First-round leader Matt Cook of Western Carolina, who shot an opening-day 69, fell to a tie for 15th place after Tuesday’s 80.
Guilford continues its spring schedule March 30-April 1 at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
