Guilford's Peter Latimer Wins Weekly Honor
Greensboro, N.C. (4/13/07) -- Guilford College freshman Peter Latimer won Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award Tuesday. The Quakers' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) presents the weekly prize.
Latimer led Guilford at the Emory Spring Invitational in Stone Mountain, Ga., by winning the first individual tournament title of his collegiate career Monday. He finished first in the 77-student field by shooting a one-over-par 145 (72-73) and helped the Quakers place second among 14 teams. Latimer, who was tied with two other golfers at the end of two rounds, triumphed on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff. All three golfers parred the first two holes before Latimer shot an even-par four on the last hole while his opponents both shot fives. The performance also marked Latimer's first top-10 career finish and his overall score of 145 was a personal best. Latimer's stroke average of 75.11 in 19 rounds ranks third on the team, tops among freshmen.
The Emory Spring Invitational marked Guilford's sixth top-five finish in nine tournaments this season. Coach Jack Jensen's club is ranked second in the April 5 Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA)/Bridgestone Coaches' Poll and second in the Golfstat.com Division III rankings.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
