METHODIST NEW NO. 1 IN DIVISION III GCAA/BRIDGESTONE COACHES POLL
Defending national champion Guilford drops to second
NORMAN, OK (10/14/05) -- Methodist moved past Guilford to claim the No. 1 ranking in Division III men's golf in the latest GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll. Methodist holds a nine-point advantage over Guilford, despite earning less first-place votes - six - than the second-ranked squad - 10.
Oglethorpe - received the remaining first-place tally - moved up three spots to third. Nebraska Wesleyan remained at fourth while Redlands dropped two spots to fifth. Otterbein cracked the top 10 by climbing five spots to sixth and is followed by Emory and Huntingdon, who fell a rung each. Wisconsin-Eau Claire moved into the top 10 at ninth. Saint John's (Minn.) slid to No. 10.
La Grange kicked off the second 10 and is followed by Gustavus Adolphus and Greensboro, which both dropped from the top 10. Skidmore and Mary Hardin-Baylor each move up in the ranking, to Nos. 14 and 15, respectively. Allegheny debuted in the poll at No. 16 and is followed by Ohio Wesleyan. Illinois Wesleyan, Rhodes and Texas Lutheran tied at No. 18.
California Lutheran dropped five rungs to No. 21. Central (Iowa) and DePauw each fell from the top 20 into a tie for 22nd. Rochester cracked the rankings at No. 24 while Franklin completed the top 25.
LaVerne and Washington & Lee fell from the rankings.
The GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll is voted on by a panel of head coaches at Division IIII institutions. All are members of the Golf Coaches Association of America. The next GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll will be released Nov. 3.
Note: Guilford defeated Methodist
by two strokes Oct. 11 at the Greensboro College Invitational, the Quakers'
second win of the year in three meetings with the Monarchs. The teams will meet
again at this weekend's Gordin Classic in South Carolina, Oct. 16-17.
