GUILFORD GOLFERS RANKED FIRST IN THE NATION
Greensboro, NC (11/4/05) -- Guilford College's men's golf squad moved back into first place in the Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) / Bridgestone Coaches Poll released Friday. Methodist jumped ahead of the Quakers in the Oct. 14 poll, but after winning two tournaments that included the Monarchs, Guilford garnered seven of 11 first-place votes and 285 points. The Monarchs got three first-place votes and 279 points. Oglethorpe received the other first-place vote and remained in third place. Huntingdon, which finished second to Guilford in two tournaments this fall, jumped from eighth to fourth place. Otterbein rounds out the top five.
Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers beat 11 ranked squads, including Methodist and Oglethorpe, Oct. 16-17 at the 12-team Gordin Classic. The Quakers also defeated Methodist and Oglethorpe when it won the 15-team Greensboro Invitational Oct. 10-11. Guilford won three of five fall tournaments and finished fourth in another.
Junior Joseph Poplin owns the Quakers' lowest stroke average, 74.40, in 10 rounds. Senior Jeff Osberg is second on the team at 75.73 in 11 rounds. Sophomore Charles Dean's 76.00 average over four rounds stands third.
Guilford returns to action Feb. 27 at the Pfeiffer/Pine Needles Invitational.
The Quakers are the defending NCAA Division III national champions.
