GUILFORD GOLFERS SLIP TO THIRD AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Lincoln, NE (5/10/06) -- Guilford College's men's golf team slipped to third place after Wednesday's third round of the 23-team NCAA Division III Championship. The Quakers started the day with a two-shot lead, but could not stay with Nebraska Wesleyan and Redlands at the Firethorn Golf Club. Nebraska Wesleyan shot Wednesday's low round with an eight-over-par 292 to grab a four-shot lead over Redlands, which shot a third-round 297 (+13). Guilford's 302 was Wednesday's seventh-lowest round, but dropped the Quakers seven strokes behind the host Prairie Wolves and three in back of Redlands. Oglethorpe's three-day 904 leaves the Stormy Petrels 14 strokes behind Nebraska Wesleyan and one shot better than fifth-place Methodist (905).
Guilford is the defending national champion and ranked first in the May 4 Bridgestone/Golf Coaches Association of America Division III Poll. The Quakers are after their third national title in five years after winning the 2005 championship in Howey-In-The-Hills, FL, and the 2002 crown at Firethorn.
Guilford senior Jeff Osberg had the Quakers' low round for the third straight day thanks to three birdies and an eagle. He bogeyed four of the last seven holes, including a double on the par-four 16th, and finished at 75 (+4). Osberg shares eighth place in the 120-student field with a three-day 223. Senior Chris Lowman played the first nine holes at one over, but bogeyed four of the next six holes before closing with a 75. Lowman's three-day 224 puts him in a tie for 16th place. Junior Colin Clark, the defending national champion, had Guilford's third 75 after a double-bogey six on the 18th hole. Junior Joseph Poplin shot 77 Wednesday, which dropped him 11 places to 26th place at 227. Sophomore Steve Walton shot 82 Wednesday.
Rochester's Stephen Goodridge made six birdies and shot a three-under 68, Wednesday's only subpar round, and took the tournament's individual lead at 216. Playing as an individual, he holds a one-stroke edge over Redlands' Nick Obie, who held second place with a two-over 73. Oglethorpe's Danny Swanick, the second-round leader, fell to third place with a 75 Wednesday and trails Goodridge by two. Huntingdon's Alex Balog holds fourth place at 219.
The championship concludes with Thursday's fourth and final round. Guilford tees off at 12:50 p.m. (CDT) with Redlands and Nebraska Wesleyan.
