GUILFORD GOLF TEAM LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Lincoln, NE (5/8/06) -- Guilford College's men's golf team shot a
15-over-par 299 Monday and holds a four-stroke lead over Methodist (303)
after
the first of four rounds at the 23-team NCAA Division III Golf Championships at
the Firethorn Golf Club. The Quakers, the defending tournament champions, have
an eight-shot lead over third-place Oglethorpe (308) and a nine-stroke edge over
Otterbein (309) and Rhodes (309).
Guilford is ranked first in the May 4 Bridgestone/Golf Coaches Association of America Division III Coaches Poll and bidding for its third national championship in five years. The Quakers won the 2005 NCAA Division III title in Howey-In-The-Hills, FL, and the 2002 crown at Firethorn.
Four Guilford students stand among the top-21 competitors after 18 holes. Junior Colin Clark, the defending national champion, and senior Jeff Osberg both shot three-over-par 74 and share sixth place on the individual leaderboard. Clark made a team-high four birdies, including one on the par-four 15th hole that dropped him to three under. Osberg birdied the 16th hole, which put him at one-over, but he bogeyed the last two holes. Senior Chris Lowman (left) eagled the 15th hole and birdied 16, but finished with a double bogey and bogey. He sits in an 11-way tie for 10th place at 75. Junior Joseph Poplin also bogeyed the last two holes and shot 76, which shares 21st place. Sophomore Steve Walton made the turn at two-over, but struggled on the back nine to finish with an 80 in his NCAA Tournament debut.
LaVerne's Nathan Logan has the individual lead with a one-over 72, thanks to four first-round birdies. Four students, including Jon Deines of tournament host Nebraska Wesleyan, are one stroke of the lead at 73. The championship continues with Tuesday's second round and ends Thursday. Guilford tees off at noon (CST).
