Men's Golf Releases (2005-06) - Guilford Ranked On Top of May Golf Poll - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD'S MEN'S GOLF TEAM HOLDS TOP SPOT IN NCAA DIVISION III POLL

 

      Greensboro, NC (5/4/06) -- Guilford College's men's golf squad remained first place in the Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) / Bridgestone Coaches Poll released Thursday. The Quakers have held the top spot in each of the last four polls and in six of the last seven polls, dating back to last spring.

 

      A panel of head coaches at NCAA Division III institutions select the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll. The next poll will be released May 12 at the conclusion of the NCAA Division III Championship.

 

      Guilford garnered nine of 12 first-place votes and holds a seven-point edge over second-place Methodist, which received two first-place votes. Oglethorpe also earned a first-place vote and holds third place with 276 points. Fourth-place Otterbein traded places with fifth-place Huntingdon from the April 13 poll.

 

      Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers captured their ninth Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship April 24 for their fourth tournament title of the year and their first of the spring. Guilford, which is also ranked first in the current Golfstat.com poll, is 10-7-1 against the poll's top-five teams this season.

 

      Junior Joseph Poplin owns the Quakers' lowest stroke average, 74.91, in 22 rounds. Classmate Colin Clark, the defending NCAA Division III Tournament medalist, is second on the team at 75.61 in 23 rounds. Senior Jeff Osberg's 75.83 stroke average over 23 rounds stands third.

 

      Guilford looks to defend its NCAA Division III national title May 8-11 at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, NE.
