GUILFORD'S MEN'S GOLF TEAM HOLDS TOP SPOT IN NCAA DIVISION III POLL
Greensboro, NC (4/13/06) -- Guilford College's men's golf squad remained first place in the Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) / Bridgestone Coaches Poll released Thursday. The Quakers have held the top spot in each of the last three polls and in five of the last six polls, dating back to last spring.
A panel of head coaches at NCAA Division III institutions select the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll. The next poll will be released May 4.
Guilford garnered 12 of 16 first-place votes and holds a 19-point edge over
second-place Methodist, which received one first-place vote. Oglethorpe also
earned a first-place vote and holds third place with 363 points. Fourth-place
Huntingdon took the remaining votes for the top spot and has a six-point edge
over fifth-place Otterbein.
Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers beat six
ranked squads, including Huntingdon and Emory, April 9-10 at the 15-team Emory
Spring Invitational. The Quakers defeated Methodist and tied with Huntingdon
when it placed fourth at the 32-team Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate
March 31-April 2. Guilford won three of five fall tournaments and has seven
top-five finishes in nine events this season.
Junior Joseph Poplin owns the Quakers' lowest stroke average, 74.90, in 20 rounds. Classmate Colin Clark, the defending NCAA Division III Tournament medalist, is second on the team at 75.71 in 21 rounds. Senior Jeff Osberg's 75.95 stroke average over 21 rounds stands third.
Guilford returns to action April 23-24 at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
Championships in Poplar Grove, VA. The Quakers look to defend their NCAA
Division III national title May 8-11 at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, NE.
