METHODIST WINS RAIN-SHORTENED O'BRIANT MEMORIAL
Greensboro, NC (09/28/04) -- Defending tournament champion Methodist won its second consecutive Tom O'Briant Golf Tournament title Tuesday. The event's second and final round was cancelled because of partial flooding on the Cardinal Golf and Country Club course caused the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne. The washout marked the second time in the tournament's 17-year history that winners were determined in 18 holes due to inclement weather.
Methodist, NCAA Division III's top-ranked team according to the September 23 Precept/Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) poll, shot 296 Monday, one stroke better than Duke's 'B' team. Duke's Bryce Mueller's earned medalist honors with a three-under-par 67 that topped the 93-player field. Guilford's 'B' team (299) finished three strokes off the pace in third place, just ahead of the Quakers' 'A' team (301). Oglethorpe shot 302 and rounded out the top-five clubs in the 18-team field.
Methodist's Eric Dugas (Brewster, MA) finished second with an even-par 70 and teammate Cory Schneider (Sebring, OH) tied for fifth at 73. Guilford sophomore Joseph Poplin (Eden, NC), playing for the Quakers' 'A' team, shared third place with Oglethorpe's Jonathan Davis (Kennett Square, PA). Schneider, Hampden-Sydney's Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA) and Johan Blixt (Lerum, Sweden) of Pfeiffer's 'B' team placed fifth at three-over 73.
This year's tournament featured eight of NCAA Division III's top-25 teams, including five of the top-10 squads. Four of Division III's last six national champions also competed. In addition to top-ranked Methodist, third-ranked Guilford, fourth-ranked Greensboro and number-eight Emory made the O'Briant one of Division III's top fall tournaments.
