  • GUILFORD OPENS 20-STROKE LEAD AT NCAA DIVISION III GOLF TOURNEY

Howey-In-The-Hills, FL (5/11/05) -- Guilford College's men's golf team shot a nine-over-par 297 Wednesday and extended its lead to 20 strokes after the third of four rounds at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort. Wednesday's play was suspended during the afternoon with 12 of the 23 teams on the course and resumes Thursday at 7:00 a.m. Teams left on the course Wednesday will finish their third round and move immediately into the fourth and final round. Guilford and the other leaders will tee off at 12 noon as scheduled.

The Quakers, ranked second in the May 6 Precept Division III Coaches Poll, started the day with a 10-shot lead over second-place Greensboro. Guilford's third-round score exceeded Tuesday's season-low 285 by 12 shots, but its 297 still ranked third among the 11 teams to complete the third round. Greensboro shot 307 Wednesday and holds and three-shot edge over Redlands for third place. The nation's third-ranked team, Redlands shot 296 Wednesday. Top-ranked Methodist had the Wednesday's low round with a seven-over 295, which helped the Monarchs climb two spots into seventh place.

Guilford sophomore Colin Clark shot his second straight sub-par round with a one-under 71, which moved him within a shot of the lead in the 120-individual field. Clark had four birdies Wednesday and trails LeGrange's Michael Lemmo by one shot. Lemmo overtook second-round leader Dave Patterson of Guilford with a one-over 73 in the third round.  Patterson, a three-time All-American who shot 69 in each of the first two rounds, had five bogeys on the back nine (including a double-bogey on the 18th hole) Wednesday on the way to an eight-over 80. The senior sits in third place among the individual leaders.

Guilford junior Jeff Osberg turned in his best round of the tourney with a one-under 71. The 2004 Delaware State Amateur champion birdied the 12th, 13th and 14th holes and jumped from 49th to 22nd in the individual standings. Junior teammate Brant Stovall played the first 16 holes at one-over par, but bogeyed the 17th and 18th holes to finish with a 75. Stovall is seven-over for the tournament and ranks 11th individually. Sophomore Joseph Poplin fired an 82.

Methodist's Mike Townsend had Wednesday's lowest round among student-athletes who completed the third round with a two-under 70.
