GUILFORD GOLF TEAM THIRD AFTER OPENING ROUND OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Howey-In-The-Hills, FL (5/9/05) -- Guilford College's men's golf team shot a 14-over-par 302 Monday and sits in third place among 23 teams after the first of four rounds at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort. The Quakers trail leader Nebraska Wesleyan (300) by two strokes and second-place Emory (301) by one stroke in the 23-team field.
Guilford, ranked second in the May 6 Precept Division III Coaches Poll, went off in the day's second group and had the lowest score among the squads who played in the morning.
Guilford senior Dave Patterson's three-under-par 69 leads the Quakers and
ranks second among 120 individuals. Patterson, a three-time All-American,
was two-over par through the first four holes, but played five-under-par the
rest of the way. Sophomore Colin Clark played even-par golf through the
first 16 holes before closing the round with a bogey on 17 and a double-bogey
six on 18. His 75 stands 17th among the individuals. Junior Brant Stovall
(left)
overcame two bogeys on the front nine by scoring two birdies on the back nine
and sits in a tie for 44th with a six-over 78. Junior Jeff Osberg
provided Guilford's fourth score with an 80. Sophomore Joseph Poplin shot
an 85.
Loras' Pete Weber, playing as an individual, has the individual lead with a four-under 68, thanks to seven first-round birdies. Another individual, LaGrange's Michael Lemmo, shares second place with Patterson. The championship concludes with Thursday's fourth and final round.
