Statesville, NC (09/14/04) -- Guilford's 'B' team won the Billy Joe Patton Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Tuesday at the Statesville Country Club. The Quakers shot 299 in Tuesday's second and final round for a 593 total that beat second-place Tusculum by nine shots. Charleston's Michael Todd claimed medalist honors with a five-under-par 144.
Guilford freshman Steve Walton (West Chester, PA/Downingtown) shot a two-over 146 (73-73) and placed third, one of three top-six performers. Sophomore Blake Wagner (Delray Beach, FL/Cardinal Gibbons (Flagler)) placed fifth with a two-day 147 (73-74) and took fifth. The top-five finishers received all-tournament honors. Guilford junior Jeff Osberg (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) just missed all-tourney honors by slipping to sixth with a two-round 149. He shot an opening-round 70 in Monday's second round and trailed Todd by one stroke at the start of Tuesday's round.
Coach Jack Jensen's 'A' team opens its season Sept. 20-21 at the Johnny Palmer/Uwharrie Point Invitational at Badin Lake, NC.
