GUILFORD GOLFERS FALL TO THIRD IN THE NATION
Greensboro, NC (4/15/05) -- Despite winning its fourth tournament of the season and knocking off the nation's number-one team, Guilford College's men's golf squad fell one spot to third place in the Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) / Bridgestone Coaches Poll released Friday. Methodist stayed atop the poll and received nine of 20 first-place votes. The Monarchs have been ranked first in every regular-season poll since May 7, 2003. Oglethorpe captured seven first-place votes and jumped to second place. The Stormy Petrels hold a four-point lead over Guilford for the second spot. The Quakers had two first-place votes and earned 456 points, seven more than fourth-ranked Redlands, which also received two first-place votes. St. John's (MN) dropped a spot to fifth place and Greensboro College climbed four spots into sixth place.
Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers beat seven ranked squads, including Methodist and Oglethorpe, April 11-12 at the 17-team Emory Spring Invitational. Guilford had the low round both days and topped second-place LaGrange by 12 strokes and third-place Methodist by 14 shots. The Quakers also defeated Methodist when it won the 22-team Pfeiffer/Pine Needles Invitational March 1. Oglethorpe took second at the rain-shortened Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Tournament April 1-3 in Camp Lejeune, NC. Methodist finished two strokes back in third place, followed by the Quakers. Guilford also enjoyed a successful fall campaign, which included an important win at the 12-team Gordin Collegiate Classic October 11. The Gordin consisted of 12 of the top-14 finishers at the 2004 NCAA Division III Championships.
Sophomore Colin Clark owns the Quakers' lowest stroke average, 74.53, in 17 rounds. Junior Jeff Osberg is second on the team at 75.07 in 14 rounds. Junior Brant Stovall's 75.31 average over 16 rounds stands third.
Guilford returns to action this weekend (April 16-17) at the Navy Spring
Invitational. The Quakers took 12th at the 2004 NCAA Division III National
Tournament and won the national title in 2002.
