GUILFORD MOVES UP TO SECOND IN DIVISION III GOLF POLL
Greensboro, NC (10/14/04) -- Guilford's men's golf team climbed into second place in the Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) / Precept Coaches Poll, the GCAA announced Thursday. Methodist remained atop the poll and received 11 of 13 first-place votes. Guilford advanced one spot from the previous poll and earned 283 points, 39 points behind Methodist. Redlands moved up to third place, ahead of St. John's (MN), which received two first-place votes. Emory rounds out the top five. Greensboro fell from fourth to 12th place in the poll.
Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers are coming off a significant tournament victory last Monday at the 12-team Gordin Collegiate Classic, which consisted of 12 of the top-14 finishers at the 2004 NCAA Division III Championships. Guilford defeated 11 schools ranked among the top-16 squads in the September 23 GCAA/Precept Poll, including number-one Methodist. Earlier this fall, the Quakers placed second at the Greensboro Invitational and fourth at the Tom O'Briant Memorial. The Quakers demonstrated their depth by winning the Division II-laden Billy Joe Patton Intercollegiate September 14 with a 'B' team.
Freshman Steve Walton (West Chester, PA/Downingtown) leads Guilford with a 73.14 stroke average in seven rounds. He made his 'A' team debut at the Gordin after three top-20 finishes in 'B' team showings. Sophomores Joseph Poplin (Eden, NC/Morehead) and Colin Clark (Durham, NC/Chapel Hill) stand second on the team with a 75.29 average.
Guilford concludes its fall season October 23-24 in the NCAA Division III Championship Preview Tournament in Howey-In-The-Hills, FL.
The Quakers finished 12th in the 2004 NCAA Division III National Tournament and won the national title in 2002.
