  • GUILFORD GOLFERS FARE WELL AT BRYAN AMATEUR TOURNAMENT

Greensboro, NC (06/13/05) --  Guilford College's Joseph Poplin held off roommate and teammate Chris Lowman to win the J.M. Bryan Amateur Championship Sunday at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center. At least four Guilford alumni competed in the event, including two flight winners.

Poplin, who helped Guilford win the 2005 NCAA Division III Championship in May, shot 72-69-73 for a three-day score of 214. His Saturday round of 69 marked the third-lowest of the tournament and vaulted the rising junior into the lead. Lowman, a rising senior for the Quakers, overcame an opening-round 75 and shared Sunday's low round with a 69. His score of 215 shared second place in the 63-player field with Steve Sharpe and Tim Saylor. Marc Cox '80, who played golf for the Quakers, finished two strokes off the lead at 216, good enough for a share of fifth place. Former Guilford baseball standout Stephen Foulks '93 shot 247, which ranked 55th.

Brodie Baker '61 led from start to finish and won the first flight of the J.M. Bryan Flighted Amateur Tournament. The 1995 Guilford Athletics Hall of Fame inductee had the flight's low round with a 68 Friday and finished with a three-day 213, four shots ahead of runner-up Christopher Borocz in the 12-man field. Former Guilford basketball student-athlete Shawn Peterson '97 captured flight three of the tournament by one stroke over Jason White. Peterson shot 82-80-76-238 for the victory in the 14-man field.
