GUILFORD GOLFERS HONORED
Greensboro, NC (10/03/03) -- Guilford's golf team moved up to fifth in the Precept Division III Coaches Poll and sophomore golfer Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/Walnut Cove) won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Golfer of the Week honor for the week ending October 1. Stovall becomes Guilford's first winner of the league's weekly prize this season.
After debuting at 12th place in the first Precept poll, the Quakers opened the season with a win at the 22-team Johnny Palmer/Uwharrie Point Invitational and took third among 18 squads at the Tom O'Briant Memorial last Tuesday. Guilford's 'B' team played in the Dogfight at Stoney Creek September 22-23 and finished fourth among 12 teams. Guilford notched wins over many Division II schools at the Johnny Palmer/Uwharrie Point Invitational and trailed only Methodist and Oglethorpe in the O'Briant.
Methodist and Oglethorpe remained in first and second, respectively, in October 1 Precept poll. Ohio Wesleyan and Gustavus Adolphus are also ranked in front of Guilford, although the Quakers defeated Ohio Wesleyan in the O'Briant. Guilford received one first-place vote in the poll.
Stovall
leads the team and ranks second in the ODAC with a 72.50 stroke average
through four rounds. He matched his career low with a score of 69 in the second
round of the O'Briant to finish with a two-day 144, good enough for third place
in the 90-player field. Stovall took eighth at the Johnny Palmer/Uwharrie
Point Invitational with a two-over-par 146.
Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers are back in action this Monday and Tuesday at the Greensboro Invitational at the Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, NC.
