GUILFORD WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT ODAC GOLF TOURNAMENT
Guilford's Colin Clark Named ODAC Golfer of the Year
Laurel Fork, VA (04/20/04) -- Guilford College sophomore Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) shot a three-under-par 69 Tuesday and claimed medalist honors as his Quakers captured the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golf Championship at Olde Mill Golf Club. Guilford fired a second-round 295 for a two-day total of 600, 39 strokes ahead of runner-up Washington and Lee's 639.
Guilford is the first team in league history to win five consecutive ODAC golf titles and has won eight ODAC championships since joining the league in 1992.
Lowman carded Tuesday's low round and finished with an even-par 144 for the tournament. Teammate Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes), the tourney's first-round leader, finished at 150 after firing a 76 in Tuesday's final round. Virginia Wesleyan's Larry Antonizzi finished third, followed by Guilford freshman Joseph Poplin (Eden, NC/Morehead). Quakers' sophomore Jeff Osberg (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) finished in a tie for sixth place. The top-six finishers received All-Tournament recognition.
The ODAC golf coaches selected Guilford freshman Colin Clark (Durham, NC/Chapel Hill) as the league's Golfer of the Year. Clark becomes the fourth straight Quakers' player to win the award. He joined teammates Lowman, Stovall and sophomore Daniel Day (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) on the First Team All-ODAC squad. Guilford head coach Jack Jensen won his league-record seventh ODAC Coach of the Year prize.
The Quakers, ranked third in the latest Golfstat Division III Head-to-Head Standings and fifth in the Precept Division III Coaches' poll, await the announcement of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament field. Redlands will host this year's event at the PGA of Southern California in Calimesa, CA, May 10-13. Guilford, the 2002 NCAA Division III champions, finished 17th at last year's national tournament.
