GUILFORD GOLFERS PLAY WELL AT NC AMATEUR TOURNAMENT

Durham, NC (06/21/04) -- Guilford's Colin Clark (Durham, NC/Chapel Hill) shot a two-under par 70 in Sunday's fourth and final round of the North Carolina Amateur Golf Championship to place sixth in the 144-player field with a three-under 285. Clark was one of four Guilford players competing at the Croasdaile Country Club, Clark's home course.

Raleigh's Paul Simson won his fourth North Carolina Amateur crown with a nine-under 279, including a 69 Sunday.

Clark (left) a rising sophomore, picked up where he left off after a successful rookie season for the nationally ranked Quakers. He shot 71 in each of his first two rounds and a one-over 73 Saturday before turning in the final round's third-lowest score Sunday. A 2004 PING honorable mention All-America selection, Clark earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Player of the Year and Guilford's Most Valuable Player prizes in his rookie campaign.

Harrison Pinnix (Severn, NC/Ridgecroft Academy), who graduated from Guilford in May, slipped two places with a final round 76, his highest of the tourney, and finished in a four-way tie for 23rd place at 293. Guilford's Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews), a rising junior, finished 61st after Sunday's 80 gave him a 303 total. Rising sophomore Joseph Poplin (Eden, NC/Morehead) missed the cut after shooting 73-79-152 in the opening two rounds and placed 93rd.

The four players helped Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers to 12th place at the 23-team NCAA Division III National Championship in May. Guilford spent most of the 2003-04 season ranked among the top-five teams in the Precept/College Golf Coaches Association Division III rankings before finishing the season in 12th place. The Quakers also won the 2004 ODAC championship, their league-record fifth in a row.
