Beaumont, CA (05/12/04) -- Guilford shot 314 Wednesday and fell three spots into a 14th-place tie with LaGrange in Wednesday's third round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club at Oak Valley. The Quakers trail leader Gustavus Adolphus by 44 strokes. The Gusties fired an 11-over-par 299 Wednesday and maintained the top spot in the 23-team field entering Thursday's fourth and final round. Tournament host Redlands and Methodist both moved within six strokes of the leaders Wednesday.

Guilford freshman Colin Clark (Durham, NC/Chapel Hill) shot a three-over 75 for the second time in three rounds and has the Quakers' best individual position (T23) with a three-day 226. Clark's tournament-high seven bogeys overshadowed his tournament-best four birdies Wednesday. Classmate Joseph Poplin (Eden, NC/Morehead) matched his opening-round 79 Wednesday, a day after scoring a team-best 75. Sophomores Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) and Daniel Day (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) both shot 80 Wednesday. Sophomore Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes) struggled to an 87, four shots higher than his previous college high score.

Ohio Wesleyan senior Chad Poling continued his bid for a sixth straight 2004 individual tournament title with a one-over 73 Wednesday. He holds a five-stroke lead over Methodist's Adam Horton, who fired his second round of 71 Wednesday. Otterbein's Andy Miller had a round-low 68 Wednesday, the second-lowest score in the 120-player tournament.

Guilford won the 2002 NCAA Division III national title and finished 17th in last year's event.
