GUILFORD STANDS 11TH AFTER TWO ROUNDS OF NCAA TOURNAMENT
Beaumont, CA (05/11/04) -- Guilford's men's golf team shot a 16-over-par 304 Tuesday and climbed one spot into 11th place after two rounds of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club at Oak Valley. The Quakers trail leader Gustavus Adolphus by 29 strokes. Gustavus Adolphus fired an even-par 288 to overtake first-round leader Ohio Wesleyan and tournament host Redlands.
Guilford, ranked third in the May 6 Precept Division III Coaches Poll, had Tuesday's ninth-lowest round. The Quakers bettered their first-round score by eight shots.
Sophomore Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) and rookie Joseph Poplin (Eden, NC/Morehead) each shot three-over-par 75 and had the Quakers' lowest scores Tuesday. Lowman bounced back after being disqualified Monday for signing his scorecard despite an error made by his scorer. Freshman Colin Clark (Durham, NC/Chapel Hill) shot a four-over-par 76 and has the Quakers' highest individual position (T18) with a two-day 151. Poplin made four birdies in his round while Clark eagled the par-five fourth hole. Sophomore Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes) provided Guilford's fourth score with a six-over 78, one shot better than his opening-round score. Classmate Daniel Day's (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) three birdies were overshadowed by four double bogeys in his round of 80.
Ohio Wesleyan's Chad Poling followed his stirring opening-round 66 with a one-under 71 Tuesday and carries a seven-shot lead into Wednesday's third round of the 120-player event. The championship concludes with Thursday's fourth and final round.
