Beaumont, CA (05/10/04) -- Freshman Colin Clark (Durham, NC/Chapel Hill) shot a three-over-par 75 to help Guilford to 12th place among 23 teams after Monday's opening round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club at Oak Valley in Beaumont, CA. The 2002 national champion Quakers shot a 24-over 312 and trail first-day leader Ohio Wesleyan by 22 strokes. Ohio Wesleyan holds an eight-shot edge over tournament host Redlands after Monday's opening-round 290. Gustavus Adolphus (299), Emory (300) and LaVerne (301) round out the top five.

Guilford, ranked third in the May 6 Precept Division III Coaches Poll, was seeded among the top-six teams in the field and among the second group off the tees Monday. Ohio Wesleyan went off with the first group and took advantage of Chad Poling's six-under 66 and Justin Schroeder's two-under 70, the two lowest individual rounds of the day.

Clark, Guilford's 2003-04 Most Valuable Player and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Golfer of the Year, sits in a 10-way tie for 18th place in the 120-player field. Sophomore Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes), sophomore Daniel Day (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) and rookie Joseph Poplin (Eden, NC/Morehead) each shot seven-over 79. Sophomore Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) turned in Guilford's second-lowest score Monday (78) but was later disqualified after signing his scorecard despite an error made by his scorer.

The four-round tournament continues through Thursday.
