- Former Guilford golfer Savio Nazareth qualifies for the U.S. Amateur (07/31)
Greensboro, NC -- Former Guilford golfer Savio Nazareth (Orlando, FL/Dr. Phillips (Brevard J.C)) qualified for a spot in the 2002 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship Tuesday by finishing fourth at a sectional qualifying event at the Olde Naples Country Club in Naples, FL. Nazareth shot 141 (70-71) over the two rounds and won a playoff with Chris Black for the fourth and final qualifying slot on the third playoff hole.
The berth guarantees Nazareth's first U.S. Amateur Championship appearance August 19-25 in Oakland Hills, MI. Nazareth played in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship July 15-16 in Washington, MI where he shot 146 (74-72), but lost in a 14-man playoff for four spots to reach the 64-player match-play field.
Nazareth concluded his collegiate golf eligibility in May by leading Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers to the school's first NCAA Division III Golf Championship. Nazareth placed 18th individually to earn his second straight third-team All-America honor. He set a number of school records in his two Guilford seasons, including career and season stroke average.
