Greensboro, NC (09/30/02) -- Duke's Tom Lefebvre (Camp Lejeune, NC/Lejeune) tied the tournament record with a five-under par 65 in Monday's first round of the ninth annual Tom O'Briant Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by Guilford College at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club. The sophomore's play helped Duke's "B" team shoot nine-over-par 289, four shots ahead of second-place Methodist in the 18-team field.

The Blue Devils are the two-time defending tourney champions and have won three of the last five O'Briant titles. Junior Mike Adams (White Plains, NY/St. Stephen's Episcopal) and freshman Nathan Smith (Santa Cruz, CA/Robert Louis Stevenson) shot 72 and 73, respectively for Duke.

Lefebvre tied the mark set by former Walker Cup player Eoghen O'Connell of Wake Forest in 1986 when the event was called the Guilford College Invitational. Lefebvre had a shot to break the record, but a birdie putt on the 18th hole lipped out and he settled for par. He shot three-under 32 on the back nine.

Nine-time Division III champion Methodist placed three players among the top 14 individuals and sits four shots off Duke's pace. Monarchs' sophomore Mike Townsend (Garner, NC/Garner) heads a pack of four players five strokes behind Lefebvre at even-par 70. Wesley junior Adam Frank (Highland, PA/Fairfield) also shot 70, which helped the Wolverines to a third-place tie with host Guilford at 295. Rookies Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes) and Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) each shot 72 for the Quakers, the defending Division III national champions.

Play concludes at the par-70, 6,671-yard Pete Dye-designed course with Tuesday's second round.
