Delaware, OH (05/15/03) -- Guilford's golf team placed 17th among 23 teams at the 2003 NCAA Division III Golf Championships Thursday at the Dornoch Golf Club in Columbus, OH. The Quakers shot 307 in Thursday's fourth and final round and finished 48 strokes behind tournament champion Averett, which overcame a nine-stroke deficit to beat third-round leader Wesley by five shots.
Guilford, ranked fourth in the May 7 Precept Division III Coaches' Poll, finished out of the top 11 for the first time in its last six national tournament appearances. The Quakers were making their fourth straight NCAA Championship appearance and their 11th in the last 12 years.
Guilford freshman Jeff Osberg (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) shot Guilford's best round Thursday with a three-over-par 74, a career low. Classmate Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) recorded the Quakers' best individual finish with a four-day 300 that ranked 31st in the 120-player field. Junior Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central), the defending national runner up, started the day in 16th place, but faltered with a final-day 82 that dropped him to 43rd with a 303.
Averett's Janne Mommo maintained his lead in the individual standings and took medalist honors with a three-under 281 after Thursday's one-over 72. He won by three shots over St. John's (MN) Nathan Proshek, who also shot 72 Thursday.
Other Guilford results include: freshman Aaron James (Paget, Bermuda/Bradenton Academy (FL)) (85-74-80-77-316/98th) and freshman Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes) (82-83-77-322/110th).
