Delaware, OH (05/14/03) -- Guilford's golf team lowered its score for the second straight day Wednesday, but failed to gain ground on the NCAA Division III Championship leader board at the Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, OH. The defending national champions shot 298, their first sub-300 score in seven rounds, but stayed in 18th place among 23 teams. The Quakers' three-day 916 ranks 35 strokes behind leader Wesley, which shot 287 Wednesday and pulled away from Tuesday's co-leader, Averett, by nine strokes.

Guilford freshman Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) carded the Quakers' lowest score of the tournament with an even-par 71 Wednesday and moved up 12 spots to 28th place in the 120-player field. Junior Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central), the defending national runner up, remains in contention for his third straight All-America honor at 16th place with a three-day 221. The top 18 finishers, including ties, are eligible for All-America recognition.

Averett's Janne Mommo held his lead in the individual standings with a two-under 69 Wednesday. Mommo grabbed the lead with a Division III Tournament record 65 Tuesday. He has a three-shot edge over St. John's (MN) Nathan Proshek, who shot his second straight 69 Wednesday.

Other Guilford results include: freshman Jeff Osberg (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) (80-81-77-238/95th), freshman Aaron James (Paget, Bermuda/Bradenton Academy (FL) (85-74-80-239/100th) and freshman Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes) (82-83-77-242/110th).

The four-round tournament concludes Thursday. Guilford is ranked fourth in the May 7 Precept Division III Coaches Poll.
