Delaware, OH (05/13/03) -- Despite shooting eight shots better than it's opening-round total, Guilford's golf team slipped to 18th place among 23 teams halfway through the NCAA Division III Golf Championship at the Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, OH. The Quakers' two-day 618 ranks 24 strokes behind co-leaders Wesley and Averett. Averett erased Wesley's 11-stroke lead with a second-round low 291 Tuesday.

Guilford is ranked fourth in the May 7 Precept Division III Coaches Poll and the defending NCAA Division III champion.

Guilford freshman Aaron James (Paget, Bermuda/Bradenton Academy (FL) bounced back from an opening-round 85 with a team-best 74 Tuesday. He moved up to 80th in the individual leaderboard with a two-day 159. Junior Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central) and freshman Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) both shot a four-over-par 75 Tuesday. Patterson's two-day 148 stands 13th among the 120 competitors. Lowman ranks 40th with a two-round 153.

Averett's Janne Mommo blistered the par-71 course with a six-under 65 to assume the top spot on the individual leaderboard with a two-day 140. He holds a three stroke edge over St. John's (MN) Nathan Proshek, who shot 69 Tuesday for a 36-hole 143. First-round leader Anthony Apolostico of Wesley, who shot the Monday's lone subpar round, fired a 77 Tuesday and slipped to 11th place.

Other Guilford results include: freshman Jeff Osberg (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) (80-81-161/94th) and freshman Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes) (82-83-165/111th).

The four-round tournament continues through Thursday.
