Delaware, OH (05/12/03) -- Junior Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central) shot a two-over-par to help Guilford to 17th place among 23 teams after Monday's opening round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, OH. The defending national champion Quakers shot a 29-over 313 and trail first-day leader Wesley by 21 strokes. Wesley holds an 11-shot edge over Averett, Denison and Gustavus Adolphus after Monday's eight-over 292.

Guilford, ranked fourth in the May 7 Precept Division III Coaches Poll, teed off at 8:00 a.m. with a number of the tourney's other top teams. The squads found wet and windy conditions early in the day before the weather cleared up for teams with later tee times, including Wesley, Denison and Gustavus Adolphus, who went off at noon. Guilford tees off Tuesday at noon and the forecast is for partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low 60s.

Patterson, who finished second to Wesley's Chris Noll at the 2002 NCAA Championships, sits in a five-way tie for fourth place in the 120-player field. Wesley's Anthony Apolostico shot the day's only subpar round with a one-under 70 and has a one-shot lead over Averett's Toni Karjalainen.

Freshman Chris Lowman (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) turned in Guilford's second-low score Monday with a seven-over 78 and sits 45th. Other Guilford results include: freshman Jeff Osberg (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) (80/68th), freshman Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/North Stokes) (82/97th) and freshman Aaron James (Paget, Bermuda/Bradenton Academy (FL) (85/114th).

The four-round tournament continues through Thursday.
