Vogelbach Passes for ODAC-Record Eight TDs in Guilford Football Win
Buena Vista, Va. (9/1/07) -- Guilford College’s Josh Vogelbach broke school and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) records with eight passing touchdowns in Saturday’s season-opening 70-26 football win over host Southern Virginia University (1-1). The redshirt-junior quarterback completed 27-of-35 passes for 417 yards and three two-point conversion attempts in just under three quarters of work. His eight scores broke the former ODAC mark of seven passing scores, set by Hampden-Sydney College’s J.D. Ricca in 2005.
Guilford scored 10 touchdowns in its fourth-highest scoring day in school history. The Quakers reached the 70-point plateau for the first time since a 79-0 win at East Carolina University Nov. 12, 1932.
Vogelbach completed just over 77.1 percent of his pass attempts in the sixth 400-yard passing day of his 21-game college career. He had seven touchdowns and 312 yards by halftime, including five scoring passes in the second quarter, which helped the Quakers turn a 14-12 deficit into a 50-26 halftime lead. With 77 career passing scores, Vogelbach moved to within three touchdowns of Emory & Henry College’s Gary Collier for second place on the ODAC’s all-time list.
Junior Kevin Vaughn caught seven passes for 170 yards and two scores, all career highs. Joe Joyner scored touchdowns on three of his six receptions, also a career high. Hagen Miller had six catches for 89 yards and two scores, plus two of Vogelbach’s three successful two-point conversion passes.

While Guilford’s defense yielded 189 rushing yards and two touchdowns to senior Brion Morriss, the Quakers (1-0) held Southern Virginia scoreless for the final 34:42 of the game. The NAIA-member Knights rolled up 510 total offensive yards, but converted just two-of-14 third-down opportunities, one of nine in the second half. Guilford sophomore Richard Paul made a game-high 13 tackles in his first game with the Quakers. He also had an interception, which set up a Guilford score. Teammate Bryan Cook added six stops, recovered two fumbles and returned a fumbled two-point conversion attempt 87 yards for a rare defensive two-point conversion.
Luke Taylor completed 17-of-26 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns for Southern Virginia. Matt Hadfield had seven catches for 134 yards and two scores.
Guilford visits Methodist University Saturday (9/8) at 1:00 p.m. The Knights host Ferrum next Saturday.
