GUILFORD FOOTBALL DOWNS EMORY & HENRY, 42-6
Greensboro, NC (11/12/05) -- Redshirt-freshman quarterback Josh Vogelbach passed for 440 yards and four touchdowns in Guilford College's 42-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win over visiting Emory & Henry Saturday in both teams' season finale.
The Quakers' fourth straight win gives them a 5-5 overall record, their best
since an 8-2 mark in 1997. Picked sixth in the ODAC's preseason coaches poll,
Guilford shared second place in the league with a school-best 4-2 ODAC record
and overcame a 1-5 start. Emory & Henry ends its season with a 1-9 record (1-5
ODAC).
The
Quakers' defense gave its best performance of the year, yielding only a 53-yard
touchdown pass from Travis Woods to Brennan Stewart in the second
quarter. Guilford forced four Emory & Henry turnovers, which led to a pair of
second-half touchdowns. The Quakers' Devon White made a team- and
career-high eight tackles and two interceptions.
Guilford led 14-6 at halftime on the first of two Vogelbach to Chris
Barnette touchdown passes. The Quakers' Charlie Stroup blocked Emory &
Henry's punt on the Wasps' ensuing possession, setting up a four-yard
Vogelbach scoring run.
The Quakers took the third-quarter's opening possession down to the Wasps' 28-yard line, but Travis Frazier's 45-yard field goal fell wide left. Emory & Henry took over and moved to the Quakers' 19 yard-line before White picked off his second Woods pass and returned it 38 yards to Guilford's 40-yard line. White intercepted Woods in the Quakers' end zone in the second quarter.
White's second pick of the day led to a seven-play, 60-yard scoring drive
that ended with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Vogelbach to junior
Micah Rushing. Emory & Henry went three downs and out on its next
possession, which returned the ball to Vogelbach. The East Carolina
transfer needed only four plays to find sophomore Joe Joyner in the end
zone from 14 yards out and give Guilford a quick 28-6 lead with 4:29 left in the
third quarter.
The
Quakers' defense yielded five first downs and 108 yards in the second half. The
Wasps went 0-for-5 on second-half third-down conversions and were 3-for-13 in
the game. Woods completed 23-of-41 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown.
Stewart finished with nine receptions for 140 yards and a score. Gavin Haynes
made seven catches for 42 yards and Jerad Jackson had four grabs for 74
yards. Senior Jay Murphy made a game-high 13 tackles and had one of the
Wasps' 11 pass breakups. Junior linebacker Marshall Doss finished with
eight stops and made two interceptions.
Vogelbach capped a record-setting season with his sixth straight game with at least 334 passing yards. He set almost all of Guilford's season and single-game passing records, plus NCAA Division III freshman passing marks for pass completions (280), pass attempts (475), passing yards (3,549), passing touchdowns (37) and total offense (3,638 yards). Barnette entered the game ranked second in Division III in receptions per game and fourth in receiving yards per game. He made a game-high 14 catches for 195 yards and two scores Saturday, his sixth game with at least 10 catches and 100 receiving yards. He ended the year with a school-record 101 catches for 1,369 yards and 15 touchdowns. Rushing added 11 grabs Saturday for 116 yards and a score. Joyner finished with a career-best nine receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown.
