Football Release (2005-06) -Guilford Recognizes Its Senior Class - Guilford College

  • FOOTBALL RECOGNIZES ITS SENIOR CLASS

 

The Guilford College football staff would like to recognize the efforts of their senior class:  Travis Boyd, Jay Evans, Trey Funderburk, Corey Haase, Ian Kirwan, Kyle Kiser, Jon Matthews, Charlie Stroup, Aaron Tull.  The Quakers will lose nine senior to graduation in May, and are proud of the roles these seniors played this year and their accomplishments during their football tenure at Guilford College.

Travis Boyd (Not Pictured)

Boyd finished the 2005 season as a valuable player for the Quaker Defense.  Travis has already graduated from Guilford College and is presently a manager for the The Furniture Group located in Fort Lauderdale Florida. 

 

 

Jerome Evans

Jay or 'part-timer' as he is know by friends and coaches is well respected for his leadership by example and his ability to make the other student-athletes feel comfortable.  "He is what college athletics is all about," said Coach Snead.  The Raleigh native has applied to the Greensboro Police Department along with pursuing options as a U.S. Marshall.  He is thanked by the coaches for his commitment and his example.

Funderburk finished the 2005 season as a defensive lineman and four-year letterwinner for the Quaker Defense. 

 

 

Corey Haase

'Big Haase' enjoyed a great senior year.  Corey states he now has a good taste in his mouth.  He is a history major who plans on a career in education and coaching.  He will try his hand with the Carolina Fuel (AIFL TEAM) this fall.  Haase came to Guilford from Jamestown N.C. and has been a 3 year starter for the Quakers.  "He will be a good football coach, because of his passion and attention to detail."  said Coach Kiesel.

 

 

Ian Kirwan

After wrestling at Sacred Heart University, Ian transferred to Guilford and started in 25 of 30 career games.  After two years at nose guard, Ian switched to center (a position he had never played) his senior year at Guilford.   He earned All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors while also being named third team All-South Region by both D3Football.com and Don Hansen's Gazette.  Kirwan centered the Quakers line that yielded 16 sacks (third in ODAC) for an offense that threw a school record 480 times this season and ranked fifth among Division III passing leaders.  Kirwan and his line-mates were named to "D3football.com Team of the Week" after the Catholic game in which they did not yield a sack to the Cardinals defense (the ODAC's sack leaders) after a league record 72 pass attempts by the Quakers.

           

Ian will graduate with a double major in Health Sciences and Sports Medicine as well as a concentration in Psychology.  He was recently contacted and plans to attend massage therapy school and would like to eventually obtain a masters degree.  Ian credits his mother, MaryBeth Durkin, and father, Scott Kirwan, for his success.  "He is a very intelligent and adaptable man, his success shouldn't surprise anyone." Coach Kiesel.

 

 

Kyle A. Kiser

Kiser is presently training to become a employee benefits broker with BB&T Insurance Services.  He is credited by Coach Snead for his leadership and true dedication to Guilford College and its football program.  Known as K-2 by the coaches, the Winston-Salem, NC native states he has enjoyed his college experience, but that he is ready to go to work.  "Men like Kiser make Guilford College and its Football program very special," said Coach Snead.

 

 

Jon Matthews

A two year starter at right guard. Jon will graduate in May of 2006 with two degrees.  One in business management and one in computer information systems.  Jon has received an opportunity to work for BB&T as a relationship banker with aspirations of entering the management development program, and becoming a branch manager, and loan officer.

 

 

Charlie Stroup

A four year letterman who recorded 112 careers tackles, including nine for a loss.  Charlie is physics major with minors in business management and mathematics for the sciences.  He is a member of the 2005-2006 Student Athletic Advisory Council and was the 2005-06 Nereus C. English Athletic Leadership Award Recipient.  Charlie has been accepted to graduate school and is pursuing career options in engineering. 

 

The Lincolnton, NC native was voted by the coaches at this season's Most Valuable Member of the Special Team.  Charlie has been the team's full time long-snapper for two seasons with no muffed snaps.  He would like thank his parents for their support though the years.

 

 

Aaron Tull

Originally from Temple Hills MD, Aaron transferred to Guilford from Salisbury University.  He will graduate in May 2006 with a double major in computer information systems and Business management.  Tull earned varsity letters in lacrosse as well as football.  He plans on attending graduate school and has already lined up jobs opportunities, the most notable being an information Technology specialist at the F.B.I.  Aaron would like to try his hand at semi pro football and lacrosse, and also coach at the high school level.
