Football Release (2005-06) - Guilford Announces 2005 Football Schedule - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD ANNOUNCES 2005 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Greensboro, NC (8/3/05) -- Guilford College Director of Athletics Marion Kirby and coach Kevin Kiesel announced the Quakers' football schedule for the upcoming 2005 season Wednesday. The 10-game slate features a six home games, twice as many as last season, plus six Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contests.

The Quakers open the 2005 season with a road game at Ferrum September 3 before returning home for three straight games. Guilford opens its home slate with a matchup against Methodist September 10. Guilford begins ODAC play versus Hampden-Sydney September 24, a date that doubles as the Quakers' Homecoming game. The Tigers placed second in last year's conference standings and ranked 26th in the final American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) Division III Coaches' Poll.

Guilford will not have to travel far for its second road game of the season, as it takes on city-rival Greensboro in the ninth annual Gate City Soup Bowl game. The annual matchup of Greensboro's Division III schools benefits the city's Urban Ministries. The Pride claimed a 28-7 victory in last year's meeting to take a 5-3 edge in the season series. The Quakers follow up their rivalry game with a road contest against four-time defending ODAC champion Bridgewater. The Eagles have reached the NCAA Division III playoffs five straight seasons, the third-longest streak in the nation, and have won 29 of their last 30 conference games.

The Bridgewater tilt marks the start of a five-week stretch of ODAC contests to end the season. Guilford plays three of its final four games at home, including the November 12 finale with Emory & Henry. The Quakers' only road game in this stretch comes November 5 at Catholic against the school that Guilford downed for its lone win in 2004.

Kiesel expects 35 letter winners, including 12 starters, back from last year's 1-9 club (1-5 ODAC) when his team arrives for practice August 11. The 2005 season marks the 99th football campaign in Guilford history.
