Football Release (2005-06) - Guilford Picked Sixth in ODAC Preseason Football Poll - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD PICKED SIXTH IN ODAC FOOTBALL POLL

Hampden-Sydney, VA (7/29/05) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football coaches picked Guilford College sixth in their 2005 preseason football poll announced Friday at the league's annual media day. Four-time defending ODAC champion Bridgewater received six first-place votes and the top spot in the poll. Hampden-Sydney, runner-up the past three seasons, was picked second.

Guilford head coach Kevin Kiesel starts his first season with 35 letter winners returning from last year's 1-9 club (1-5 ODAC). Junior wide receiver Chris Barnette is Guilford's most accomplished returning student-athlete, after earning All-ODAC honorable mention laurels in 2004. He ranked third among the league's receptions per game leaders (5.2) after making 52 grabs for 476 yards and five touchdowns, all career- and team-high figures. His 52 catches rank seventh in Guilford history. Sophomore defensive back Bryan Cook was the team's second-leading tackler in 2004 and returns to anchor the defense. Junior running back Micah Rushing was Guilford's Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2003 and should help Barnette carry the offensive load.

The Quakers open their 99th football season September 3 at Ferrum at 1:00 p.m. Guilford hosts Methodist September 10 at 1:00 p.m. in its home opener at the Armfield Athletic Center. The team's preseason workouts begin August 11.
