GUILFORD'S BARNETTE TAKES ODAC FOOTBALL HONOR
Greensboro, NC (10/24/05) -- Guilford College junior wide receiver Chris Barnette captured the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Offensive Football Player of the Week Award Monday. He becomes the second Quakers' football student-athlete to receive the award this season, following week-five winner Josh Vogelbach '09. Barnette is Guilford's first receiver to earn the honor since Junior Lord '97 in 1996.
Barnette
set a Guilford record with 200 receiving yards and established a career-high in
receptions with 13 in the Quakers' 28-26 last-second victory over first-place
Washington and Lee October 22. Barnette scored two touchdowns, both
in the decisive fourth quarter, including the game-winning score from 12 yards
out on fourth down with three seconds remaining. His 13 receptions rank seventh
in ODAC history and his 200 receiving yards stand sixth. Barnette is
seven receptions shy of the school record, set by Geoff Clark '72 with 70
in 1970.
Through seven games this season, Barnette has 64 catches for 849 yards and nine touchdowns, all career highs. He is second in the ODAC in receptions and receptions per game (9.13), fourth in scoring (58 points) and receiving yardage per game (121.3) and ninth in all-purpose yards. Barnette entered the week ranked fourth among NCAA Division III leaders in receptions per game and 13th in receiving yards per game. He should move up in both categories when the NCAA releases its updated statistics.
Head coach Kevin Kiesel's Quakers (2-5, 1-2 ODAC) earned their first conference win and second victory of the season with Saturday's triumph over Washington and Lee. Guilford faces Randolph-Macon in a home game this Saturday (10/29) on the school's Hall of Fame Day.
