FERRUM DROP GUILFORD 41-7 IN OPENING GAME OF SEASON
FERRUM, VA
(9/3/05) -- Ferrum College opened its 2005 gridiron campaign with a 41-7
non-conference romp over visiting Guilford College this afternoon. The Panthers
rolled up 412 yards in total offense, including 352 rushing yards.
Coach Dave Davis' team used an opportunistic
defense, forcing five turnovers to counter a Quaker offense which totaled 339
yards but put just seven points on the board.
Ferrum opened the scoring with a 30-yard
touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jermaine Pitts to junior tight end Chris
Silk less than five minutes into the game. Sophomore kicker Matt Novak made the
extra point to put Ferrum up 7-0.
Pitts found sophomore wide receiver Carlos Rubio
for a 23-yard scoring strike as time expired in the first quarter. Novak's kick
lifted the Panthers to a 14-0 lead.
Guilford could not move the ball on it's first
possession of the second quarter, and junior defensive back David Coleman
returned the ensuing punt 61 yards to the Quaker 20-yard-line. On Ferrum's first
play, Pitts found senior running back Dustin Hamoy wide open in the flat and
Hamoy raced in untouched from 20 yards out. Novak's PAT was good, and Ferrum led
21-0 at the 14:14 mark of the second quarter.
On
Guilford's next possession, the Quakers faced fourth and three at Ferrum's
33-yard-line. Quarterback Josh Vogelbach's pass was intercepted by
freshman defensive back Rashad Price. Ferrum started its drive on it's own
31-yard-line, quickly moved the ball downfield and capped a five-play, 69-yard
drive when sophomore backup quarterback Lloyd Parker scampered 46 yards for the
Panthers' fourth TD of the game. Novak was injured on the PAT, which sailed wide
right, leaving Ferrum with a 27-0 lead at 11:25 of the second quarter.
Later in the quarter, senior running back Terrell Mulford took a quick pitch
from Pitts, turned the corner and sprinted 87 yards down the right sideline for
the final score of the half. Junior running back Jacob Hawkins replaced Novak at
kicker and his successful PAT gave the Panthers a 34-0 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, the two teams
traded touchdowns in the fourth. Junior wide receiver Carlton Hughes made a
spectacular catch of a 17-yard lob from Parker in the back of the end zone for
Ferrum's final score. Hawkins put Ferrum up 41-0 with the PAT.
The Quakers finally got on the board when
Vogelbach hit wide receiver Joe Joyner for a 2-yard scoring strike
with 2:03 remaining in the game. Junior kicker Travis Frazier hit the
extra point for the final 41-7 margin.
The Panther running attack was well-balanced,
with nine players carrying the ball for an average of 7.1 yards per carry.
Mulford led the Panthers with 97 yards and a score on three carries. Pitts was
4-8 passing for 76 yards, with three TDs and no interceptions. For the Quakers,
Vogelbach was 22-42 for 268 yards. He passed for one touchdown and threw
three interceptions.
Guilford (0-1) entertains non-conference
Methodist in its home opener at 1 p.m., while the Ferrum (1-0) travels to Emory
& Henry College next Saturday.
